Why can’t Obama admit the surge worked?

USA Today has an excellent editorial out on the “Surge” and Obama continuing to say he would not support it.

Why then can’t Obama bring himself to acknowledge the surge worked better than he and other skeptics, including this page, thought it would? What does that stubbornness say about the kind of president he’d be? …

Even knowing the outcome, he told CBS News Tuesday, he still wouldn’t have supported the idea. …

The great irony, of course, is that the success of the surge has made Obama’s plan to withdraw combat troops in 16 months far more plausible than when he proposed it. Another irony is that while Obama downplays the effectiveness of the surge in Iraq, he is urging a similar tactic now in Afghanistan. …

Perhaps it’s too much to ask that Obama risk being taunted by headlines such as “Obama says Bush was right.” …

Americans don’t expect their president to be right all the time. They do expect him to change course when he’s proved wrong.

Frederick: Obama would vote against our military

Del. Jeff Frederick, chairman of the Republican Party of Virginia, issued a statement today about Barack Obama’s comments that he would still vote against the surge after admitting the surge had worked.

“It is incredible that a man who seeks to be Commander-in-Chief of our armed forces would oppose a military mission, despite knowing that it would succeed.

The American people need to take a moment and think about this. Notwithstanding the fact that the surge has saved the lives of soldiers and civilians, and despite that it has vastly improved the situation in Iraq, Barack Obama still would oppose it today. Unbelievable.

This is an unprecedented admission by a major party candidate of loyalty to partisan politics above all else; politics above the safety of our troops; and politics above the security of our nation against those that seek to do us and our way of life harm.

With nearly every public statement, Barack Obama exhibits his complete lack of a qualifications and judgment to hold our nation’s highest office, and this most recent comment only reinforces that view.”

To see the Obama comments in context, here’s the excerpt from ABC News.

Responding to assertions by Glenn Nye that Rep. Thelma Drake not hold a fundraiser with Karl Rove today, State Sen. Frank Wagner and Del. Sal Iaquinto both issued statements.

Sen. Wagner said:

“Glenn Nye has a lot of nerve to ask Virginia Beach voters to support him when he can’t be counted on to practice what he preaches. One day Nye’s campaign falsely accused Karl Rove of “breaking the rules” of the House and called on Thelma Drake to cancel a fundraiser with him. The next day, they called their own standard “absurd” and refused to return $4,000 from Charlie Rangel, who admitted that he violated House Ethics Rules on fundraising. Glenn Nye seems to be more interested in empty partisan political rhetoric than holding himself to his own standard. I call on him to return Charlie Rangel’s money because Virginia Beach residents know hypocrisy when they see it.”

And, Del. Iaquinto stated:

“The people of Virginia Beach expect their candidates for public office to keep their word. On Monday, Glenn Nye’s campaign demanded that Thelma Drake cancel a fund raiser with Karl Rove, who has done nothing wrong. Nye’s campaign falsely said Rove broke House rules. On Wednesday, Nye’s campaign called their own standard “absurd” when they were asked to return $4,000 from Charlie Rangel, who admitted to the New York Post that he violated House Ethics Rules on fund raising. Glenn Nye must live up to his own standard and return Charlie Rangel’s money or risk looking like a hypocrite to Virginia Beach voters.”
